First Meeting Photo and Art Project
Edmonton – Galerie Cite provides a unique forum to present visual art exhibitions in the main spaces of La Cite Francophone. The First Meeting photos are on display at La Cite Francophone until April 10, alongside a Visual Art Exhibit featuring local Aboriginal Artists, produced by the Rubaboo Art Festival.
What if we could re-create a first meeting between First Nations peoples and the Voyageurs? What did that really look like?
The idea is to portray the true setting, where Canada’s First Peoples are seen as healthy, friendly people, who helped the Voyageurs and Settlers live on the land. Many artworks and stories of the ‘First Meeting’ have been inaccurately portrayed in history as either negative and scary, or cast were in a romantic and idealized environments, which have reinforced stereotypes still seen today.
The photos in this exhibit were taken on October 20, 2014 in Louise McKinney Park. The regalia and props are from today, actors and actresses were instructed to re-enact a First Meeting as if it were to happen today. We hope to see artists, photographers and community members join us for more photo shoots in 2015!
